Position Description

This is a full-time position in the City of New Haven Health Department that is responsible for clinical and administrative oversight of the nursing division of the department of health. As part of the Health Department’s overall goal and objectives, has responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and evaluating a generalized Nursing Program for the City of New Haven, which includes School Health Services and Communicable Disease Control programs.


Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, with concentration in public health; or a Master’s Degree in public health / administration; and demonstrable experience  in public health practice related to nursing, with at least two years’ experience in a supervisory or administrative capacity, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, abilities and skills as stated in the job description, including but not limited to:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practice of the public health nursing and of Federal, State and local laws and ordinances relating to public health;
  • Possession of the knowledge, methods and techniques necessary to direct, guide and assist staff members to fulfill their job responsibilities;
  • Willingness to accept administrative leadership in the total public health program;
  • Thorough knowledge of the functions of health related social agencies.
  • Possession of a valid, current Registered Nurse license issued by the State of Connecticut;
  • Graduation from an accredited National League of Nursing (N.L.N.) program with a Bachelor of Science degree program in Nursing;
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification;
  • Valid and current Connecticut driver’s license.
